Sweaty armpits, unruly leg hair, step patterns, survival and striving to perform. Poses, pleasure and shame. Bodies merging and colliding. Back rows and front rows. The muffled tapping of dance shoes and endless spins.
10 000 Spins is a warm caress for the middle-aged dancing and performing body – a cheer for a life lived, for the history that remains visible in an ever-changing body.
In the work, dance artists Elina Hauta-aho and Kati Raatikainen explore how the ideals of different eras, societal changes, power dynamics within dance cultures and perceptions of what it means to be human become inscribed in our bodies. What traces do decades of training, performing, successes and failures leave on the body? And how can movement help us understand, challenge and transform our place in the world?
Taking an autobiographical approach, the work weaves together the artists' personal experiences and broader societal phenomena. At the same time, it opens up perspectives on the politics of the body, the history of dance and the attitudes that shape how we see ourselves and one another.
10 000 Spins is a moment of reflection on a twenty-year journey in a wonderful and terrible profession. It is a tribute to dance, which has been a lifeline for its creators since childhood. The work celebrates all that has been lived, experienced and imagined – as well as friendship and the journey shared along the way.
