A Dance Piece in Four Hours
Can we create a dance piece together in four hours? What if we decide to create the piece during this workshop (2 × 2 h) and approach it as being just as meaningful as a work prepared over two months—at least for the brief moment when it is performed at the end of the workshop.
“I have long been interested, in my teaching and mentoring, in building each performer’s personal material through different tasks and scores. How does each person interpret the tasks from their own starting points and produce movement material shaped by all the life experience and dance background they carry with them? Even in small ‘works’ created over a short time, there may be a seed of something that the dancer might later choose to develop further within their own practice,” says Meri Pajunpää.
During the workshop, we will develop personal movement material for each participant—something like mini solos—which we will then assemble into a performable whole. Finally, we will arrange the materials overlapping, simultaneously, or sequentially in time and space. In this way, the materials and their performers enter into dialogue with one another, with chance adding its own flavor to the final outcome.
