Description

LITTLE OSTROBOTHNIA DANCES
IN KRISTINESTAD

Satu Tuittila & working group:
“Small & Significant”

The Ostrobothnia Dances festival also reaches Kristinestad this year, where Satu Tuittila and her working group present the work Small & Significant at Kristinahallen on Tuesday, March 24.

This dance performance is aimed at children of primary school age and explores nature and humanity through small and important – yet at the same time very big – questions.

In the performance, we become acquainted with the fascinating lives of the inhabitants of a flower meadow. Alongside the dance, the performance offers exciting knowledge about pollinating insects that are vital to nature and humankind – bees, bumblebees, hoverflies, butterflies, and beetles. We encourage and inspire audiences to observe their surroundings and to engage in small, nature-supporting actions in their local environment.

Small & Significant brings together artistic practice and scientific research and makes use of diverse ways of seeing and experiencing dance. Through dance, the theme can be approached in a dynamic and playful manner. The experiential and participatory educational material accompanying the performance aims to convey information in an accessible and memorable way.

Ninety percent of the world’s wild flowering plants and 75 percent of cultivated crops depend at least partly on pollinators. In recent years, the number of pollinating insects has declined at an alarmingly rapid rate worldwide. Habitat loss, the use of pesticides, intensive agriculture, and the increasing sterility of urban environments continue to threaten pollinators.
