Meet the regional dance artist Jussi Hanhirova
Published on
Our 2024 regional artist, Jussi Hanhirova, works at the intersection of art, science, and technology, developing methods that enable interaction between cutting-edge technology and contemporary dance. When human movement meets computational algorithms, artificial intelligence becomes a catalyst for new innovations, offering fresh tools to support choreographic work.
Jussi aims to create a cross-disciplinary dialogue about the role of art, creativity, and AI in our society, while deepening both individual and collective experiences of the unique embodied nature of dance. His particular areas of interest include movement improvisation techniques in dance, the different layers of collective and personal movement memory, and various AI-based tools for dance and choreography.
Amid the technological revolution, human creativity and the embodied experience of contemporary dance remain at the heart of art. Artificial intelligence does not replace the artist—it provides a new way to explore movement, emotion, and embodied storytelling. Human dancers and AI assistants embark together on a journey of discovery, laying the groundwork for new artistic possibilities in the ever-evolving world of contemporary dance.
For Jussi, the most important thing in life is to maintain a curious and playful attitude and to enjoy the journey.
At the turn of May and June, Jussi Hanhirova will be touring the municipalities of Pietarsaari, Pedersöre, Kronoby, Larsmo, and Nykarleby, offering workshops and performances for audiences of all kinds.
