How does dance work on screen?
Are you interested in creating a dance video? Come explore the relationship between movement and the camera and learn the basics of moving image under the guidance of dance filmmaker Kati Kallio.

During this two-weekend workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of cinematic storytelling through practical filming exercises and will create short dance videos.

The workshop outcomes will be presented on INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY, 29 April 2025, as part of the Moving North screening at Hugo Hall, Kalevan Navetta, at 18:00.

Workshop dates:
29–30 March 2025 – Saturday 14:00–18:00, Sunday 11:00–16:00
12–13 April 2025 – Saturday 14:00–18:00, Sunday 11:00–16:00

Location: Dance Academy, Kisällintie 9, 60100 Seinäjoki

For whom: Dance and theatre enthusiasts / students, media students, dance teachers, and anyone interested in moving image and film production.

Pre-assignment: Prepare approximately one minute of movement material that you can repeat during the workshop.

Recommended age group: Young people and young adults (participants under 18 must bring a filming permission form signed by a guardian).

Instructions:
Participants will primarily use their own mobile devices (phone or tablet) for filming. Make sure your device has enough storage space for new video material.
If you are familiar with using a video camera and have editing software, you may also bring your own camera and laptop. Ensure that transferring material from your camera to your computer works smoothly.
Editing software can be a mobile editing app or a computer-based program. Make sure your device has one installed. You can explore free and well-functioning editing programs in advance here:

Bring your chargers, pen, notebook, snacks, clothing suitable for movement, and be prepared to work outdoors as well.

About Kati Kallio:
Master of Arts in Dance, Kati Kallio is a dance filmmaker and Finland’s leading expert in the field. Over her career, she has worked widely within dance art, directed more than 20 short films, and received international awards for her work. In 2024, the Finnish Dance and Circus Artists’ Association (STST) awarded her the Dance Recognition Award for her distinguished and exemplary work in the field of dance film.

Kallio is a pioneer and advocate of Finnish dance film. Between 2008 and 2018, she worked with Loikka Kontakti ry, advancing the position of Finnish dance film, and served as the artistic director of the Loikka Dance Film Festival from 2015 to 2018. Earlier, she was responsible for the festival’s audience engagement, creating screenings and educational programs for children and youth.

As a dance film expert, she continues to work as a curator, mentor, and workshop facilitator both in Finland and internationally. Since 2021, she has served as an international curator for the CinedansFest festival in Amsterdam, and she has curated Tanssivirtaa Tampereelle for over 15 years.
