Apply! Dancers for Flora Fauna Project “Praying Positions/Metamorphosis”

Published on

Ostrobothnia Dances is an annual event for both the general public and dance professionals, taking place on 12–15 March 2025. This year’s event features high-quality dance performances, artistic outcomes from the Nordic Regional (Net)Working project, and a diverse workshop programme.

On Saturday, 15 March at 14:00, the Swedish Flora Fauna Project will present Praying Positions / Metamorphosis in a public space in Vaasa city centre. The piece was created over several years, and its choreography was eventually distilled into a movement score that anyone can follow. The score emerged from a process in which Maria Nilsson Waller, after 20 years of working in dance, sought to understand, befriend, and heal her own body. The original music was composed by The Sei, and both the music and the choreography will be released in 2025 through Paragon Records.

We are now seeking professional dancers from the Regional Dance Centre of Ostrobothnia’s area to join the performance. Selected dancers will participate in the open workshop on Friday, the performer workshop on Saturday morning, and the performance itself on Saturday in Vaasa city centre. We are looking for 2–3 performers.

Schedule:
Fri 14 March, 13:15–16:00 – Flora Fauna Project: Open Workshop | Venue: Funkkis
Sat 15 March, 10:00–12:00 – Flora Fauna Project: Workshop for Performers | Venue: Funkkis or performance location
Sat 15 March, 14:00 – Praying Positions / Metamorphosis | Public space, Vaasa city centre (exact location to be confirmed)

About the work
Praying Positions / Metamorphosis explores transformation and evolution – the continuous forces that have shaped all life since the beginning of time. In order to understand and reconcile with her body, choreographer Maria Nilsson Waller listened to its signals, traced chronic pain, and released tensions accumulated over time. By studying how emotions manifest as physical states, the work came to life. It can be seen as a form of prayer – an instinctive, embodied dialogue with nature, embracing life’s ongoing cycles of change.

The work premiered at the Tipperary Dance Platform Festival in 2020 and was later selected by Oona Doherty for an online presentation in collaboration with Dance Umbrella London in 2021. By 2023, the piece had been performed at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin during Lent, continuing its journey through theatres, festivals, and sacred spaces. In 2025, a reimagined version will be presented as a group performance in public spaces during the Österbotten Dansar Festival in Vaasa.

Artistic team
Maria Nilsson Waller is a choreographer, dancer, and designer from Östersund, Sweden. She studied at Härnösand Folk High School, the Royal Swedish Ballet School, SEAD Salzburg, and ESDC Rosella Hightower in Cannes. She has created 20 independent productions and led over 200 workshops for school groups, as well as four large-scale community dance projects. In 2017, she founded Flora Fauna Project together with Irish multidisciplinary artist Stace Gill, forming an international dance company based in Östersund (Sweden) and Laragh (Ireland).

Flora Fauna Project explores humanity’s relationship with nature, the environment, and natural intelligence through dance, music, installation, and film.

Stace Gill, known artistically as The Sei, has created music since 2008 (produced by Ross Dowling). Since founding Flora Fauna Project in 2017, The Sei has been the exclusive musical director for its productions. Represented by Paragon Records, The Sei has released FFP’s music on the EPs LUMEN, Bluebells, and Golden Heron. Their music has featured in TV series including Normal People, Conversations With Friends, The Rising, Day of the Jackal, and Apple TV’s Truth Be Told.

Stace has filmed, directed, and edited most of The Sei’s music videos, many featuring Maria Nilsson Waller – with the exception of Sentient, animated by award-winning illustrator Matt Griffin. Stace has also created and composed the documentary for FFP’s The River, designed stage projections for LUMEN, and directed the short film version of LUMEN, which premiered at Light Moves Festival in Ireland in 2021.

Flora Fauna Project is an international dance company based in Ireland and Sweden, led by choreographer Maria Nilsson Waller and multidisciplinary artist Stace Gill. The group explores human relationships with nature, the environment, future visions, and natural intelligence, combining dance, music, installation, and film. In addition to performances, they offer artist talks, community projects, and workshops for schools, adults, and professionals.
