Riina Kalmi is a dance artist from Isojoki. She graduated as a dance teacher from the Arts Academy at Turku University of Applied Sciences in 2007. Riina has performed as a dancer in works by choreographers such as Francesco Scavetta (Wee company), Horacio Macuacua, Hanna Brotherus and Kati Raatikainen. In recent years, she has also worked in the field of cultural wellbeing.
In this workshop, Riina Kalmi shares her embodied practice around the themes of bodily empathy and imagination.
“I am interested in the performativity of imagination – bodily action or a state that expresses imagination. Imagination holds within it the possibility of perceiving what lies inside another mind or one’s own body, what is beneath the water or along the arc of the sky, what belongs to the past, what awaits in the future. It symbolizes the human ability to create values and meanings even from scarce materials.”
The workshop includes improvisation exercises both individually and together, valuing the creativity and imagination of each participant.
Riina Kalmi’s work is supported by the South Ostrobothnia Cultural Foundation.
