Dancing Diamonds: Dance! – Exhibition

The inclusive dance group Dancing Diamonds presents a multidisciplinary art exhibition entitled Dance! The exhibition is gently radical: bold yet friendly. It brings together photography, written texts and dance. Its themes include embodiment, sensuality, and the experience of dancing and moving in different environments.
Dancing Diamonds is a dance group based in Kokkola, consisting of three dancers. The members of Dancing Diamonds are Maria Lahti, Jarmo Patana and Sanna Tornikoski. The group’s work emphasises professionalism and the development of the dancers’ skills through practice. The group has previously performed works such as Quartet (2019) and Encounters (2023), which have been presented at a variety of venues and events, including the Tampere Theatre Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The photographs in the exhibition were taken by photographer Salla Keskinen. The photographs were created according to the dancers’ own wishes, allowing them to decide how they want to be seen.
The writing of the exhibition texts was facilitated by creative writing instructor Hanna Dufva. The texts in the exhibition were written by the dancers themselves. They describe what dancing, the body and sensory experience feel like. Choreographer Kati Raatikainen coordinates the group’s activities and guides the dancers in their choreographic work.
A book created as part of the Dance! project will be published in connection with the exhibition. Welcome to the book launch on Thursday, 1 October, from 5 to 6 pm! Dancing Diamonds will perform at the event.
