Description
"Liminal Spaces" is a site-specific work by choreographer-dancer Janne Aspvik and musician-sound designer Markku Essel. The piece explores three different liminal spaces interpreted through movement and sound. When we travel, we move from point A to point B. The journey between these points can be seen as a representation of life itself, which has a beginning and an end. Life is therefore a liminal space in itself. Relationships, careers, and interests can also be seen as liminal states. Awareness of this can create a sense of urgency — the feeling that everything we want to achieve must be done before it’s over — which can be both positive and negative. It is important to find balance between urgency and presence. "Liminal Spaces" explores this state.
Janne Aspvik graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki in 2010. He has worked as a dancer at the Helsinki City Theatre, Dance Theatre Raatikko, Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth, Routa Company, JoJo – Oulu Dance Centre, Aurinkobaletti, and in works by Tero Saarinen, Alpo Aaltokoski, Petri Kekoni, Liisa Pentti, Elina Pirinen, Janina Rajakangas, and Maya M. Carroll. Aspvik has created his own choreographic works since 2012.
Markku Essel is a sound artist and musician whose recent works include the dance pieces Encounters (2023), Us Too! (2023), and Quartet (2022), and the sound installations Hear Here (2022) and Static Chamber Orchestra (2021). Essel is also a singing guitarist in the band Orphan Waves.
At the Pohjanmaa tanssii event, "Liminal Spaces" will be performed amidst the bustle of a Thursday afternoon and the busy urban atmosphere of the Rewell Center shopping mall in the centre of Vaasa.
