Description

A Human Ensemble is a tapestry of nine simultaneous solos emerging from the collective pre-consciousness of a group of performers.

Nine performers of different ages and professional backgrounds surrender to a poetic stream of bodily consciousness, allowing their inner landscapes to resonate, flow, and collide with external ones. Operating with committed playfulness through a loosely structured choreography, in a grand space embraced by a warm ochre tone, they dance into being an unpredictable and always unique ecosystem that no one can control alone. They dance with their whole selves, together.

The unruly musical field of the piece is a nostalgic dive into both classical choral works and garage and 1960s pop rock. A Human Ensemble unfolds to the viewer as a constantly choreographing network of interactions, allowing for frictions and consoling coexistence between contrasting intensities and openings, between micro- and macroscapes.

The work is based on choreographer Karolina Ginman’s psychophysical practice, “the reformation of free association for the poetic body,” inviting an infinite spectrum of (psycho)dynamic states, intensities, volumes, tempos, and affects to be lived through by both dancer and viewer. During the creative process, the working group and demo audiences have been accompanied by psychoanalyst and psychologist Anne Kotkavirta and psychoanalyst and philosopher Jussi Kotkavirta as reflection partners.
